Chocolate Pecan Pie & A Heart Garland

I read somewhere that today is National Pie Day -- who knew?  So, being the slacker pie blogger that I am, I thought I should finally post a pie recipe in honor of the day.  This is our family's most beloved (yes, we love it) chocolate pecan pie recipe -- just the right balance of chocolate and pecans and not too gooey.  This recipe was given to me be a fellow grad student years ago.  Her name was Brandi, and she was a very good southern cook, well, I guess I should just say a very good cook.  I believe this recipe originally came from the "Magnolia Collection" cookbook.

Here it is:

Chocolate Pecan Pie

½ c. melted butter
1 c. sugar
1 c. light corn syrup
4 eggs -- beaten
2 T. bourbon (if desired)
¾ c. chocolate chips
1¼ c. pecans
1 unbaked pie crust
whipped cream

Combine all ingredients (except whipped cream of course) and pour into the pie crust.

Bake at 425° for 10 minutes on bottom rack of oven. Lower heat to 350°, and cook another 30 - 40 minutes til done. Cover with foil if getting too brown.

Serve with a big dollop of whipped cream.

And I'm trying to make a heart garland inspired by so many cute ones I've seen around blogland, on Flickr and on Etsy.  I love this one & this one made from jute, but I really didn't want to crochet with jute, so I found some yarn (Red Heart Eco Cotton in color Almond) that looks kind of like jute and made these little hearts (using this pattern).  But then, I decided they needed a little something extra, so I single crocheted around the one on the left using Aunt Lydia's cotton yarn (sz. #3 in color Scarlett), and then single crocheted around the one on the right using Lion Brand Organic Cotton (also color Almond).   Now I can't decide which one I like best.  What do you think -- the red or the white?  Or maybe both?

Well, Happy Weekend & Happy Pie Day!

You will have to do another two, with the trim switched. I think both look good, can't wait to see it all finished

Looking at it again I think it would look good as is, alternating colours. The first thing I saw when I checked out all the blogs this morning was your pecan pie, I am trying sooooo soooooo hard not to rush out into the kitchen and make it. I'm just going to sit here here and drool over my keyboard instead.

Thank you Ladies so much for the advice! You know, I think I'm just going to make one of each -- problem solved, right?

And JanJan, I hope you do make this pie -- indulge yourself! I do it all the time ;-).

Thanks so much for taking the time to leave me such kind comments!

Hi Mom. I heard that it was National Pie Day also. Interesting. I love LOVE this pie. Definitely the BEST Chocolate Pecan Pie recipe EVER! Remember when we tried a different recipe because we couldn't find this one. It turned out so gooey and yucky! I'm going to add this recipe to my recipe box right now. These heart garland are just too cute! I like both hearts! So cute! The kid's and I are planning to make paper heart garlands for Valentines Day ;-)

Thank you so much for leaving comments on every single post I do. It means so much to me! I read another blog that is kind of obscure and she has so many posts that in the beginning years of blogging she had no comments on. I have such an extra special mom! The fact that you take the time to encourage me no matter how lame my post is, makes me feel loved! Thank you!

& Ofcourse you can add any song that you want from my player. I think I got most of my songs from you ;-) Love you!

I like the look of the red trim...seems a little lighter feel. your garland will be beautiful with either choice!! have fun enjoying the process of creating!

I could not decided on which heart I liked best, so I'll choose BOTH and any others you make to complete your garland. What a Fun idea for valentines. One of my Followers on CollectInTexas Gal made the cutest 'Heart Needle Holder' that was crocheted. Here is the link if you would like to see it and the pattern is there as well.

I didn't know that there was a national PieDay either. I think it shoul be name after you.....the BlogginPieQueen. Your Pie's have all been so yummy, and that was very brave of you to commit to Pie for such a long time. I'd have been a 'Double Slacker Pie Maker'. The one today is really a Double LoveIt Whammy....Chocolate and Pecans!! As my GrandD#l would say...OMG!!!
