Mid Winter Cheer

Unusually for me, I've been in a kind of Scandanvian mood lately.  Maybe it's all the really lovely Scandanavian blogs I've stumbled across over the last year or so, maybe it's the cold, idk, but whatever the reason, I found myself madly searching for a tablecloth my mom brought home from her trip to Scandanavia (way back in the 80's).  I don't remember liking it much at the time (too bright and gaudy I thought), so I imagine I said, "Oh, thank you so much!", tried to act like I loved it, and stashed it away.  Anyhoo, the other day, I found it and I love the way it brightens up our kitchen table.  I was so inspired, I actually set the table for Sunday breakfast (another unusual thing for me to do these days).
Seeing it on the table reminds me of my mother every day (not that a day goes by that I don't think of her anyway), and how enthusiastically she talked about their trip, how much they loved the friendly Scandanavian people, how beautiful the country was, and I'm reminded as well of the lovely joyful way she lived her life.

And then, as luck would have it, the other day I ran into the Good Will and found these Martha Stewart plates, the salt & pepper shakers, sugar bowl and creamer.  And they were half price -- I guess because they're supposed to be Christmas dishes (but I am calling them 'winter dishes' instead), and don't they just look so happy there with the cheery tablecloth?
And another use for the gift of clementines, squeeze the juice of one or two into the egg mixture for your french toast -- yummm.

I'm so glad that you were able to find & use that cheery little tablecloth. I think of them (Grandma & PawPaw) daily too. Living in this house--it's impossible not to constantly have little memories pop into my thoughts, like visitors. I heard the word gumption on The Holiday the other day............. remember how PawPaw would always say, "you got any gumption?" Makes me smile thinkin about all of those sweet memories I'm lucky enough to have. Sorry, I hopped way down that bunny trail. Anyhoo................

You lucky duck! I LOVE THOSE DISHES! I mean LOVE them. I love the scand-ie thing too! So homey.

I have a Norwegian table cloth that is gigantic. My auntie worked at a little Norwegian shop for a while. I have used it a few times but it's VERY blue and green - sort of reminds me of a stadium blanket. I like yours better! Who is going to eat all that bacon, G?
